NotebookLM — renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026, though most people still use the old name — solved a problem general chatbots never quite did: making AI answer from your material rather than its training data. Load up to 50 sources per notebook and every answer arrives with citations you can click to verify, which changes the trust equation entirely for students, researchers and analysts. Audio Overviews remain the feature that defines the category: two AI hosts (now customizable in tone and focus) discussing your documents is a genuinely better way to absorb a dense report on a commute, and Video Overviews extend the same trick to visual explainers. The 2026 upgrades — Gemini 3, a 1M-token window, Deep Research feeding web findings straight into notebooks, Data Tables and cloud code execution — have pushed it from study aid toward research workbench. Caveats: the rename churned links and muscle memory; output quality is ruthlessly bounded by source quality; and power users must buy the broader Google AI Pro bundle since no standalone tier exists. But with a free tier covering 100 notebooks and daily Overviews, the barrier to entry is effectively zero. For source-grounded work, this is the tool to beat.
