Editorial & Listing Standards

Last updated: July 28, 2026

How We Curate

Cataito is an independent, hand-curated directory. Every tool is reviewed before it is listed, and we keep listings under ongoing review. Our goal is a catalog you can trust: we prioritize genuinely useful, safe, and honestly-marketed AI tools, and we decline or remove those that put users at risk. The standards below describe exactly how we decide what stays.

What We Reject

A tool is refused listing — or removed if already listed — when any of the following applies:

  • Billing fraud: deceptive charges, undisclosed auto-renewal, refusal to cancel or refund, or a documented pattern of billing complaints.
  • Malware or unsafe distribution: bundled malware, browser hijacking, or unsafe installers/extensions.
  • Collapsed reputation: a consistent, well-documented pattern of user harm across independent sources.
  • Impersonation or counterfeiting: fake clones or tools that misrepresent their identity, ownership, or capabilities.
  • Fraud-enabling by design: tools whose primary purpose is deception or abuse (e.g. scam-oriented face/voice cloning, non-consensual imagery).
  • Privacy black boxes: no discernible privacy policy, or handling of user data in clearly abusive ways.
  • Dead product: the service is discontinued, abandoned, or no longer reachable.

What Limits a Tool's Rating

Some tools are listed but capped — we cap their rating and disclose the concern openly in the tool's pros & cons — when we see:

  • Excessive or intrusive advertising that degrades the experience.
  • A past controversy that has since been addressed (kept under observation).
  • Research-preview or waitlist-only status with limited public availability.
  • An ownership or acquisition change that we note transparently.
  • Opaque pricing that makes real costs hard to determine upfront.

Our Evidence Standard

We do not act on rumor. A red-line judgment requires corroboration from at least two independent, recent sources — such as consumer-protection records, established review platforms, or substantiated first-hand reports — before a tool is rejected or removed.

Ongoing Review

Listing is not permanent. We periodically re-check live status and pricing automatically, and we re-audit existing listings for reputation and safety over time. When a tool crosses a red line, we remove it regardless of how long it has been listed.
