Microsoft Copilot's pitch is simple: frontier-class AI, free, already installed. The free tier's GPT-5.2-powered Smart mode, Copilot Vision screen understanding and cross-session Memory would cost $20/month elsewhere, and for the hundreds of millions of people living inside Windows and Edge, the zero-friction access is the killer feature. Deep Research in Edge's Copilot Mode is a legitimate rival to standalone research agents, and Vision helping a confused parent through a printer dialog is the kind of utility benchmarks never capture. The caveats are equally real. Copilot Pro's headline promise — AI inside Word and Excel — quietly requires a separate Microsoft 365 subscription, which makes the effective price closer to $27+/month and remains the most common complaint about the product. The Windows Recall episode, where opt-out screenshot history alarmed security researchers, means privacy-conscious users should audit settings before trusting it deeply. And Microsoft's tendency to inject Copilot buttons into every corner of Windows breeds resentment among users who never asked. As a free assistant, it's arguably the best value in AI today; as a paid product, do the Microsoft 365 math first.
