The AI IDE that makes you write the spec first — and that's the point

Most AI coding tools optimize for the fastest path from prompt to diff. Kiro, AWS's entry in the race, deliberately slows you down: describe a feature and it first drafts requirements in EARS notation, then a design document, then a task list with acceptance criteria — and only then starts writing code. For solo hackers this ceremony can feel like bureaucracy, but for teams it solves the real problem of AI development: unreviewable, undocumented changes nobody can reason about six months later. The execution layer is capable too — Autopilot handles multi-file changes autonomously, Agent Hooks fire automation on events like file saves, Kiro Powers add specialized skills, and one subscription now spans the IDE, CLI and web with Auto routing picking models for you. The concerns are twofold. Credit economics draw genuinely polarized reviews: heavy agentic tasks can burn through the 1,000-credit Pro allowance quickly, and the $0.04 overage adds up. And Kiro's ecosystem is still younger than Cursor's or Copilot's. But the spec-driven bet is a distinctive, defensible position no major rival occupies. If your team has been burned by vibe-coded chaos, Kiro is very much worth trying.
