Amp is what an agentic coding tool looks like when nothing is sacred. Spun out of Sourcegraph in late 2025, the independent company ships at a pace nobody in the category matches — Orbs run agents in parallel on cloud machines while your laptop sleeps, The Dial lets you crank effort from quick-fix to deep-work with multi-model scheduling underneath, and Oracle and Librarian sub-agents handle planning and code search. This is also the team that gave the industry AGENTS.md. The same ruthlessness cuts the other way: the VS Code extension — how many users first met Amp — was killed in February 2026 in favor of CLI + web, and Amp Free closed to new signups the same month. The new Megawatt ($20) and Gigawatt ($200) subscriptions, still in beta, at least make costs predictable versus raw pay-as-you-go, where high Dial settings can burn money fast. The calculus is straightforward. If you want a tool that behaves the same next quarter, Amp will frustrate you — pick something steadier. But if you're an early adopter who wants to feel where agentic coding is going six months before it arrives everywhere else, Amp is the most interesting ticket on sale, and Worth Trying is exactly the right frame: try it, push it, and decide if you can live with its velocity.
