Our Verdict

Worth Trying

xAI's answer to Claude Code — a fast, parallel-first terminal agent that ships sub-agents as the default, not an add-on.

Grok Build is xAI's official terminal coding agent, installed with a single curl command and powered by Grok 4.5. Its defining trait is parallelism: sub-agents are on by default with a native view for monitoring them, letting one prompt fan out into multiple concurrent workstreams. Plan Mode integration, mouse support, and a fullscreen terminal UI make it one of the more polished CLI agents at launch.

The 256K context window handles mid-to-large codebases, and the model is tuned specifically for agentic engineering workflows rather than chat. If you already pay for SuperGrok or X Premium+, the agent comes at no extra cost — a notable difference from usage-billed rivals.

The caveats are maturity and platform reach. It is early beta, so expect rough edges, and Windows users currently need WSL. Teams with established Claude Code or Codex workflows won't find a compelling reason to switch yet, but Grok subscribers get a genuinely capable agent for free.

Best for

  • SuperGrok / X Premium+ subscribers wanting a coding agent at no extra cost
  • Parallel multi-task coding with sub-agent orchestration
  • Developers who like fast iteration in a polished terminal UI
  • Trying the Grok ecosystem for agentic engineering

Consider alternatives if

  • You need a battle-tested agent for production workflows (→ Claude Code, Codex)
  • You work primarily on native Windows without WSL (→ Cursor, GitHub Copilot)
  • You want inline IDE suggestions rather than a terminal agent (→ Cursor, Windsurf)
